"Helping small businesses use IT and the Internet to improve their productivity, save money and be safe"

Registering a Domain Name is simple

Registering a domain name is very simple; in fact too simple!  And when you can register a domain name for just a few pounds, you may be forgiven for believing that you have little in the way of responsibilities.

Here at Village Internet, we're aware how little people understand of what happens when a domain name is registered. When you buy a domain - or more correctly the right to use it for a limited period of time -  you have a responsibility to ensure your registration details are correct. But what do we mean by correct?

You're safe as long as you don't use it!

When you register a domain name, there is little to go wrong - provided you don't use it! The moment you use your domain name to provide access to a website your responsibilities come into sharp focus.  Dependent on how you've registered your domain name, even a change in the content of your website could suddenly invalidate your registration details.

Whenever you register a domain name, there are some questions you need to answer:

  • What function will the intended website carry out?
  • Who will be the owner of the website?
  • Is your chosen domain name likely conflict with an existing trade mark
  • Are you registering it in bad faith?

You may have a prized investment

However, once you've chosen which domain name(s) you want, it's imperative that you register them properly. Although, domain name registrations are relatively cheap to register, their value in terms of their intellectual property.  Hopefully they will quickly outweigh their face value as they begin to promote and support your brand, or even become the brand itself.  That's why it's important to get the registration right first time.

We want to help you register your domain name correctly, and then hopefully a domain name that may only cost a few pounds a year to register may become famous and become a recognised as a household brand. This could mean that a domain name that will continue to cost only a few pounds each year to renew, could eventually become worth many thousands of pounds in terms of its value as intellectual property!
