What is a broadband Microfilter?

A broadband microfilter is a small device that plugs into your BT telephone socket and separates the voice and broadband signals coming in through your telephone line. The microfilter then presents you with these two sockets:

  • Standard BT telephone socket (for your telephone)
  • ADSL broadband socket (for your modem/router)

If you don't install a microfilter, you may hear a sound similar to a buzzing noise when you make a telephone call. You may also experience poor service such as slow response due to errors being induced on the line. Apart from your BT Master Socket , you'll also need to have a microfilter connected to each Slave Socket in your premises, that either:

  • Forms part of the telephone line carrying your broadband signal
  • Has a device attached to it

TIP1

Micro-filters are relatively cheap. Make sure you have a spare to hand in case you have a problem with your broadband connection. It's probably the first thing you will get asked by your broadband provider when you report a problem... have you changed your micro-filter?
